More Thoughts on Archiving

Eric Harnden, of Quintessential Studios, sent me the following:

I know you’ve covered disk-based archiving vs. tape-based archiving before but I ran across this white-paper that I think is very interesting.

http://edge.networkworld.com/whitepapers/nww/pdf/tape_and_disk_square_off.pdf

This is a 12-page PDF document, published in Feb. 2008, by The Clipper Group a consulting group comparing the relative merits of archiving digital data to tape (specifically LTO-4) versus hard disk.

Written from the perspective of a corporate data center and taking a close look at the cost-benefit analysis, they come out very strongly in favor of tape for archiving.

While financial and somewhat technical, this is still an interesting study that I wanted to share with you. Thanks, Eric, for letting me know about this.
